Populonia and the Gulf of Baratti

In Tuscany the Southern part of the Etruscan Coast , which also includes the Piombino promontory, is a vast area of woods and countryside on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The Gulf of Baratti has clear waters, a small marina and a very long sandy beach framed by a large necklace of domestic pines. The Via dei Cavalleggeri runs alongside the Promontory of Piombino and leads to enchanting bays like that of San Quirico and the Buca delle Fate. Behind the Gulf of Baratti, the remains of the metalworking furnaces, a production that characterized the area since the Iron Age and the Etruscans, and sites of great archaeological interest: the necropolis of San Cerbone and Casone, the Porcareccia hill or the itinerary of via delle Cave, in the woods, to the Grotte necropolis. And finally Populonia, the medieval village which also preserves the remains of the Roman acropolis.

Piombino Archaelogical Museum: silver amphora from the Baratti Harbour. It is a masterpiece of Late Antique oriental art, coming from Antioch, and is characterised by 132 oval applications with figures connected to the worship of Cybele.
