Above a high oval base, surmounted by a further staircase, decorated with festoons and a dedicatory epigraph, there is the sarcophagus which is decorated the profile portrait of the poet carved on the pediment within a medallion with the inscription "VICTORIVS ALFERIVS ASTENSIS". The mourning figure is an allegory of Italy and mourns the loss of one of his most esteemed children, in the composed and solemn attitude of an ancient matron.
